Overview

El Yantar de Ayer stands out as a notable culinary spot nestled within the bustling Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid. This restaurant offers a vibrant atmosphere that mirrors the lively market itself, making it an excellent choice for both locals and tourists seeking a taste of traditional flavors with a modern twist.

The true highlight here is undoubtedly the empanadas, especially the Empanada de Carne. These handheld pastries are crafted with care, showcasing a variety of fillings that range from classic Iberico ham to spicy chorizo, each delivering a distinct, rich flavor profile. While some diners appreciate the quick service and plentiful options, others note that the dough can occasionally fall short of expectations in texture and flavor, hinting at room for refinement in the kitchen.

Beyond empanadas, the menu presents interesting choices such as marinated olives with unique combinations, adding a tasteful complement to the main dishes. The vibrant market location adds a layer of charm, though it contributes to a sometimes hectic and crowded environment. This atmosphere may not suit those seeking a quiet, relaxed dining experience but fits perfectly for visitors looking to immerse themselves in Madrid’s lively food culture.

El Yantar de Ayer appeals primarily to food enthusiasts eager to explore traditional Spanish snacks with a contemporary flair. Despite mixed feedback on pricing and certain dishes, the restaurant’s strengths lie in its diverse menu and authentic market setting, which collectively create an engaging and flavorful eating experience.

The empanadas are edible but not all too great. Dough is somewhat bland and tastes undercooked, octopus was served cold in center and doesn't have much flavor other than slight fishiness. The oxtail is really good filling. The ham and cheese is average..small sizes prices are high and the atmosphere is chaotic crowders and hectic so you don't really enjoy anything. Overall expansive meh experience. Would rather go to a stand alone shop out and about somewhere.
